Festivity Outdoor Storyteller Call Out

From 31 May to 21 September, 2025, Adverse Camber will be sharing outdoor storytelling for families at 10 dates, in locations across Derbyshire, as part of Festivity 2025.

Festivity 2025 is a vibrant family friendly countywide tour created by Arts Derbyshire and the Tent People, travelling to Bolsover, Stavely Waterside, Erewash, Tapton Lock and Melbourne with a magical mini-tented village, filled with artists, performers and audiences at each site.

Adverse Camber will be providing storytelling each day, led by two fabulous storytellers - festival favourite, travelling storyteller Ian Douglas and resident storyteller from Matlock Storytelling Café Rachel Murray.  Thanks to support from the Leche Trust, we have space at each date for an emerging or established Derbyshire based or regional storyteller, who wants more experience telling stories to outdoor audiences in street-theatre style!

If selected for this mentoring opportunity, you will receive £100 for each performance date you fulfil, plus your travel cost reimbursed (up to a maximum of £25 each day). You will tell stories alongside Ian or Rachel, as one of the featured storytellers in the festival programme.  Ian and Rachel will create supportive spaces for you, provide encouragement and feedback and will be on hand to answer any questions you have about developing a thriving storytelling practice, to make a living from your craft.

The performance dates are:

  • 31 May and 1 June, Bolsover
  • 21 and 22 June Staveley Waterside
  • 5 -6 July Erewash
  • 6 - 7 Sept Tapton Lock Chesterfield
  • 20 - 21 Sept Melbourne
  • Storytelling sessions (3 x 45 min slots) are between 10.30am and 4.30pm. You will need to be present throughout this time.

Our aim is to support 5 storytellers (1 per weekend). Depending on scale and quality of applications, you may be invited to participate in more than one weekend.

Who’s It For:

We are excited to receive expressions of interest from storytellers living in Derbyshire or the Midlands/North, approx. 50 mile radius of events.  You must be available for at least one of the stated weekends, and be able to get yourself to and from the festival location each day using public transport or under your own steam.

You may be at the start of your storytelling career, or have a range of experience, but be looking to develop your skills in telling outdoors for mixed, non-ticketed audiences, who vote with their feet!

We are especially keen to hear from people from working class and Global Majority backgrounds (see definition below), women, LGBTQIA, disabled people and people with care experience, all of whom are currently underrepresented in our storytelling pool.

We use Global Majority to refer to people who are "black, Asian, brown, dual-heritage, indigenous to the global south, and or have been previously referred to as 'ethnic minorities'". We use ‘people of the global majority’ since this represents approximately 80% of the world's population.

You must be 18+ (or if 16-18, accompanied all day by a carer or parent)

All or part of your creative practice should be defined as oral storytelling  We define oral storytelling as the oral telling of stories through spoken word, voice, and gesture, which can also include spoken word, rhythm, music and poetry. The tales being told may have been passed down orally, such as traditional tales, myths, legends, and folktales and can also include personal, contemporary, or historical stories.
